I don't think "gnarly" in slang was in use that early, at the turn of the decade. "Funky," "get down," "all right," would have still been in heavy rotation coming straight out the 70s. I hear "gnarly" and I think mid 80s. Back to the Future onwards. Just my observation. I like writing period stuff from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, so I tend to really hear it when it's outta place. When in doubt, do not use period slang. Just avoid it. That afro and typewriter did all the heavy lifting here and they did just fine without the lingo. Immediate edit: My brain is fizzing with Michael J Fox as Alex P Keaton, and I think I remember him saying "gnarly" quite a bit.
